I'm also new to the site. I'm looking for versions of Scarlet Begonias which can be described as "powerful," "up-tempo," or "thunderous." As opposed to "lilting" or "careful". Providence 4/15/82, for example. I'm sure there are other versions that appoach SB this way, and would appreciate help identifying them. Thanks.

Sometimes I think that Scarlet Begonias is my favorite Dead song. Other days it's Eyes. The version from the ’76 Dick’s Picks is great but some of my favorite SBs are later versions such as 12/6/89-love the Midi-, the one from 6/21/89 that goes into Bucket is choice, and the S/F from the So Many Roads box is really cranking (can’t remember the date). I even saw a first set opener of Touch>Scarlet in Sept. '87 that was pretty cool but not necessarily thunderous. The 8/16/91 SB>Victim>Fire is very interesting. Hmmm….I’m suggesting lot’s of SB that don’t go directly into Fire. Plus maybe I’m making suggestions due to the outro jam and not the song itself. I guess I’m partial to later Dead because I'm really fascinated with the progress of their technology and the way that songs evolved (although, nothing beats cranking a '77 show up to 11 and making the windows shake). Hope this helps. Welcome! e.

My favorite I ever got to see, 1983-06-18 - Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
Good Aud. recording to boot.

Check out setlist.com to see which shows feature scarlet>fire come here browse by year and read the reviews, should give you a decent idea of what the want. Our I would just check out the scarlet>fire's from 77-81 for the best of the best, but you dont have to take my word for it.

Thanks Eyes, that's a good one. 4/15/82 is actually more on the crude side-Jerry messes the lyrics-the message this version conveys is something like "here we come, we're gonna run you right over."

You probably won't believe me, but the Scarlet from Charlotte Coliseum in 3/95 seems like what you described. It's got almost two completely blown verses, but we all know the words anyways. Check it out.

SDH beat me to it.

No better EYES than 10/29/77.

(of course, I think there's no better show overall than 10/29/77, so take that into consideration).

seriously, though--if "jazzy" is what you want in an EYES, this version fits the bill to perfection. Just listen to the first 3 minutes & you'll see...

10/29/77 - slow and sweet with a powerhouse ending jam, in my personal top 5

I wish you people would make up your mind....or my mind I'm not sure which. I read a review of a 73 show and said to my self "self, THIS is why '73 is the best year ever" and I just listened to this '77 show and said to myself "self, THIS is why '77 is the best year ever" !! Or better yet..... keep suggesting great versions of great songs and I will be happily convinced daily of a new favorite tune, year etc.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!
